Your pets teeth can be a real challenge but it doesn't have to be! In this post we will go over all our tips and tricks while taking you on a journey to a happier healthier mouth for your dogs and cats alike. Teeth cleaning is one of the most important things in regard to your pets health because bad teeth can lead to many other problems!  This is what we always try first!

Bones, bones, bones, and more bones! Chews are your pets best defense against plaque and tartar! We mentioned in our last post about how useful they can be for a dog for exercise, but the teeth is where they really excel! Mixing up your chews will help to clean the teeth in different ways this is because they hold chews in various ways dependent on size and shape so it's important to remember to keep a variety of chews on hand. Bully sticks and bully spirals are a nice long lasting chew that can really help to clean the back and side teeth! Things like pig ears and certain bone shapes are great for the front teeth! Puppies are easy just by giving them a set chew time a few days a week will keep their pearly whites bright! Adults on the other hand can be a different story depending on the amount of plaque already built up! For dogs with really bad teeth we recommend to have chew time everyday and then when the teeth are back in good shape you can go down to three or four times a week.

While keeping on the food theme certain treats and jerky's can also be great! Our cats for one love different lamb lung snacks that are hard enough to scrape the plaque off but easy enough for them to actually chew! Sweet potato fries and slices are another great treat for everyone along with a nice tough jerky! Of course we also recommend a variety of dental bones that will not only target the teeth but the breath as well!

One big misconception is that dry food will clean your pet's teeth! This is in fact a myth! Dry food builds up on their teeth similarly to cookies or pretzels do on humans! Canned food actually tends to slide right off and most raw diets will actually have ground bone in the food which in turn will help to clean the teeth!

Now attacking the plaque from another direction, teeth gels are the perfect option especially for your pets that are not big into chewing! What's great about these are that they require no brushing at all to break down plaque, tartar, and keep the breath nice and fresh! Now that's not to say that you can't brush because brushing would just help to speed up the process. With just a couple of drops on either side of the mouth, your pets are on their way to a brighter smile in no time!

Another option for a healthy mouth is going to be a fun product you actually put into your pets water! It’s odorless, colorless, and tasteless so your pets won’t even know its there! It consists of enzymes that actually help to level the PH of the mouth and deters the growth of bacteria, controls plaque, tartar, and of course bad breath! Using this in conjunction with any of the above options will really help to maintain the teeth on a more regular basis as well.

When it's all said and done your pet will be ready to show off their smile to everyone they come across! Not only are these ways easy and enjoyable for your pet but they're also safer than the alternative! Nobody wants to have to put their furry friend under anesthesia unless it's absolutely necessary. But there are still great non-anesthetic teeth cleaners available too! Following any or even all of the options above will definitely keep your dogs and cats teeth in the best health they can be!
